Details for: Traisental Bike Tour - Overview

Brief description

The Traisental Bike Tour is one of the most popular cycling routes throughout the Mostviertel. The family and pilgrimage cycle path runs from Traismauer through the Traisental-Danube region past St. Pölten, Lilienfeld and St. Aegyd am Neuwalde to Mariazell.

Along the route the varied landscapes of the Mostviertel show their charm: From mild to wild, from gently rolling hills south of the Danube up to the imposing mountains of the Mostviertl Alps.

The Traisental bike tour is popular with families and casual cyclists, especially in the direction of the Danube. This has several reasons:

From Kernhof or St. Aegyd you enjoy a leisurely ride, always slightly downhill along the Traisen. Along the river there are repeatedly places to stay and refresh.

Those who don’t want to cycle along the whole route in one go, can cover individual stages by bus or train. Between Kernhof and St. Pölten drives the Radtramper bus. From Lilienfeld there is a rail link to St Pölten.

IMPORTANT: The stage from Mariazell to Kernhof does require some effort. The descent from Gscheid after Kernhof is steep and winding. For families with small children, this stage is therefore not recommended.

Family stages
Along the Traisental Bike Tour there are 3 “detours” which are constituted as “family-friendly”

  •  Family line St. Pölten: Family tour through St. Pölten, to the Landhausvertel, Viehofner lakes and a lookout tower
  • Family line St. Aegyd: Family tour to the Kameltheater and white Kernhof Zoo and Horseback Riding Farm Maho
  • Family route Freiland-Türnitz: Family tour along the former railway line in the direction of Türnitz

Route description Traisental Bike Tour - Overview

The Traisental Bike Trail is due to several reasons, one of the most popular cycling routes in the Mostviertel. The interplay of landscapes enchants, while the way to the upper Traisental runs beautifully even and continuously on asphalt. The signage is also new and well visible.

From the Danube to Hohenberg the route rises almost imperceptibly, although a bit more to Kernhof. Really challenging due to steepness, is only the 4-km long section from Kernhof to the Gscheid (970 m). Followed by two more, about 2 km long average slopes, once after Gscheid and once just before Mariazell.

The bike path is connected to the ÖBB railway network until Lilienfeld. Transportation services are also provided by the Radtramper bus from St. Pölten to Kernhof. The Radtramper bus runs from May to September on Sat, Sun and holidays. During the summer holidays (July and August) the connection runs daily. For the return trip from Mariazell to St. Pölten, the Mariazell Railway is alos a viable option.

From Traismauer an der Donau to St. Pölten

From the harbor in Traismauer - and conveniently in a direct connection to the Danube Bike Tour - the Traisental-Bike Tour leads along the Traisen to Herzogenburg. In Einoed cyclists switch riversides, over a small wooden bridge. Continue on paved and well-paved riverside paths away from traffic to St. Polten.

On the whole stage, there are hardly any significant inclines, so the first part of the Traisental Bike tour is a good tip for families with children.

From St. Pölten to Lilienfeld

On paved riverside paths and quiet side streets the Traisental Bike tour leads via Wilhelmsburg to Lilienfeld. Also in this section there are no significant inclines.

From Lilienfeld to St. Aegyd am Neuwalde

From Lilienfeld the journey leads to the idyllic riverside paths past Hohenberg and some slight increases to St. Aegyd / Neuwalde. Around 200 meters of altitude will be faced in the third section, but these are easy to master even for small cyclists.

In Freiland one of the two sources of the Traisen (the "right Traisen" or "Türnitzer Traisen") leaves the sight of cyclists. From now on the path follows the Unrechttraisen that accompanies cyclists to St. Aegyd.

From St. Aegyd am Neuwalde to Mariazell

The next goal is Kernhof with its camel theater and the "white zoo". In Kernhof the most difficult part of the entire cycle path begins: The 4 km long, winding steep ascent to the Gscheid just before the border to Styria. This section has it all and is therefore often overcome on foot.

Once the highest point is reached, the route changes from good paved roads to a little-used road that eventually leads via Ulreichsberg, past the Hubertussee and along the Walster to its final destination, the basilica of Mariazell.

St. Pölten can be reached via the Western Motorway (A1), while Traismauer can be reached via the S33 and S1.
