Advent, a time of joyful anticipation...

The sound of bells, bright lights and the scent of pine needles ring in the most wonderful time of the year: Advent is here!

A peaceful period, with pleasant Advent magic. In the run-up to Christmas, Lower Austria turns into a great big Advent calendar. Over 24 festive markets and attractions can be found behind castle and town gates, in the Kellergassen and ancient ruins, up mountains and in streams.

Magical places, contemplative moments, and tradition without too much kitsch – in Lower Austria, Advent is celebrated in a long-established yet diverse way. Pear cider and ice sparkle, and visitors to the “Flammenden Weihnacht” (“Christmas by Firelight”) event in the Mostviertel enjoy light and fire spectacles. During Advent in the Weinviertel, the atmospheric Kellergassen are places where tradition mixes with contemplation. The sound of the snow crunching under winter boots will be a welcome companion during a visit to the Advent market and a walk in the Vienna Alps. The special ambience of the World Cultural Heritage Site of Wachau is made particularly magical with trumpet fanfares and songs that go directly to listeners’ hearts. And for a “hands-on” holiday, a winter break in the Waldviertel during one of the “Waldviertel Craft Weeks” is recommended.

Although gifts should not really be opened before 24 December, anyone who celebrates Advent in Lower Austria will receive a lavish natural gift before Christmas Day. Fall under the spell!
