Cheese market in Maria Taferl

Lower Austria’s biggest pilgrimage site stages a “Who’s Who” of the Austrian cheese industry once a year!

Maria Taferl is Lower Austria’s most frequently visited pilgrimage site. Once a year the visitors’ attention is shifted from the basilica to a delicious milk product. A big cheese market is held annually every third weekend in October. Alpine and small-scale dairies from around Austria can present their products for tasting and selling there from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Supplementing the countless cheese products are other victuals such as meats and sausages, rye bread and fresh baked goods made in a portable baking oven. Baskets, household products, small handicrafts, and entertainment for the kids complete the lineup.
