Read all about the highlights awaiting pupils and students of all ages during school holidays!
1. Snowshoe hiking on the Rax plateau
Enjoy impressive mountain panoramas from the Rax plateau. The best way to get there is by snowshoe hiking. Better still, why not combine your snowy trek with one or two overnight stays and some warming spa activities?
2. Guided hikes in the Donau-Auen National Park
There are also exciting guided hikes for children in the Donau-Auen National Park. Take part in a beaver spotting afternoon (from 2:00 until 5:00) on 12 February. Come and meet the National Park’s songbirds and waterfowl from 9:30 am until 12:30 noon on 13 February.
3. Walk with alpacas and donkeys in the Waldviertel
Fluffy fur and cute button eyes... It’s impossible not to love the alpacas and donkeys, who are waiting to meet you in the Waldviertel! It's not just children who are as keen as mustard and can't wait to explore the snowy winter landscape with some new animal friends.
4. Guided night hikes in the Ötscher-Törmäuer Nature Park
On certain dates in the winter, the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park rangers invite visitors to join them on a very special hike known as the Winter Night Experience! The stars shine brightly above you, the snow glitters at your feet, and the furry forest dwellers provide a musical accompaniment.
5. Guided tours for families, and daily creative activities in the Lower Austria Museum
During the holidays, the Lower Austria Museum offers fun and games for all ages, and free entry for children and youths aged 18 and under. Family tours take place daily (including Mondays) at 2 p.m.; and from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m., there are exciting creative activities to enjoy!
6. Winter hiking to the panoramic Araburg
For older children and teens, a winter hike to the Araburg Castle ruins is recommended! Once there, you can admire the view from the keep and see the difference between the rolling hills of the Vienna Woods and the Alpine foothills.
7. Tobogganing on the Semmering
Tobogganing is fun for all ages, and the Semmering Tobogganing Experience is especially impressive, as it is the longest toboggan run in eastern Austria! Tip: The toboggan run is particularly thrilling when floodlit.
8. Children’s holiday programme at Hof Castle
During the school holidays, the Creative Studio opens its doors and offers a varied programme for children, including puppet and marionette shows, felt workshops and klezmer music
