Ski touring on the piste in Lower Austria

Here you will find an overview of the ski resorts in Lower Austria, in which ski touring is permitted.

Ski tourers welcome! Here you will find an overview of ski resorts where it is possible (under certain conditions) to don your climbing skins and go up and down the pistes on an evening, or when there is very little natural snow. Please keep the “Rules for Ski Tourers on the Pistes” in mind. The ski resorts offer perfectly-groomed pistes, as well as car parks and WC facilities. There are also signposted routes or ascent tracks which allow ski tourers to safely enjoy their favourite sport.

Lackenhof am Ötscher
In the Lackenhof am Ötscher ski resort, the marked “Ötscher-Schutzhaus” ski route on the Gr. Ötscher is open to ski tourers when the lift is operating. The route starts in the rear car park in Weitental. From there, head along the road to the edge of the forest, until the path turns right and rises slightly as it leads through the forest. After a few minutes, you will reach Piste #2 of the Gr. Ötscher. The ascent route runs along the left edge of the piste (as seen from below), until the path branches off further up, to the left of the ski path. After a right turn, continue along the skiing route, towards Piste #2. Shortly afterwards, the ascent route leads left and into the forest. From this point onwards, you are in a wooded area away from the ski pistes. The ascent to the Schutzhaus is marked out. The upper part of the ascent track, in the wooded area, is not approved for descent.

Gemeindealpe Mitterbach
Gemeindealpe Mitterbach offers ski tourers two signposted ascent routes with different difficulty levels (blue/red and red/black). These routes lead directly along the groomed edge of the piste from the cable car station to the summit (at 807 m and 1,626 m above sea level respectively).

Annaberg ski resort
In the Annaberg ski resort, it is possible to ascend the piste at the side, or – in appropriate snow conditions – on marked paths.

Mönichkirchen-Mariensee cableway
Climbing the edge of the piste served by the Mönichkirchen-Mariensee cableway is possible every Thursday when the lift has closed (except during snow preparation).

Unterberg ski resort
In the Unterberg ski resort, it is possible to climb the edge of the piste.

Arabichl ski lift in Kirchberg am Wechsel
From the Arabichl ski lift, ski tourers can head towards Arabichl or the Hochwechsel, making sure to keep to the left of the pistes.

Breitenfurt ski lift
The pistes around the Breitenfurt ski lift are also open for ski touring. The outer edge of the piste must be used when ascending. There is no dedicated ascent route.
