Brief description

Wonderful loop trail from Payerbach up to Kreuzberg.

Description

This snowshoe hike leads from Payerbach as a loop trail over Kreuzberg and back to the starting point. Through the Payerbachgraben, it goes up to the Stoierhöhe and to the Kaiserbühel, past a chapel. The intermediate destination on the round is the Speckbacher hut, where you can not only eat and drink, but also plan an overnight stay for a longer stay (day of rest Thursday). Soon you will reach the summit of Kreuzberg at 1084 metres above sea level. From the back of Kreuzberg, you can enjoy breathtaking views towards Semmering and Sonnwendstein. On the way back, you can explore part of the railway hiking trail and make a detour to the historic nostalgia post office in Küb before returning to Payerbach, where numerous excursion possibilities and culinary destinations as well as high-quality overnight accommodations await all those who want to stay longer in the Viennese Alps.

Route description From Payerbach to the Speckbacher hut

From the station we walk along the street into the village. We cross the Schwarza river and, passing the church, follow the road south into the Payerbachgraben. (Red mark path 834). After the railway viaduct, the path accompanies the road first to the right above in the forest, then to the right to leave it and over a ridge to Stoier Höhe. From here we always stay on trail 834 and reach the Speckbacher hut via Kaasbühel. Always staying on the ridge of Kreuzberg, following the red mark eastward we will descend to the Klammer chapel. Here we turn left onto the railway hiking trail (blue markings) and return via Küb to Payerbach and the railway station.

Your hiking experience in the Vienna Alps should be a thoroughly enjoyable and safe one. Therefore, please bear the following in mind: Preparation: When choosing a route, make sure it corresponds to your experience and physical fitness level. Check the weather forecast before you set off. The weather can change surprisingly quickly in the mountains. Always take appropriate equipment with you (e.g. rain protection).

Check whether the cabins and snack stations you intend to visit along the way are open. Inform someone before you set off of your chosen route and when you plan to return.
