Description

The Carnuntinum Museum is a must for every visit to Carnuntum, as it houses, among other things, the finds from 2,000 years of Roman history in Carnuntum. Currently, the exhibition "Weltstadt am Donaulimes" covers the history of Carnuntum, the stories of its inhabitants and the UNESCO World Heritage Site at the gates of Vienna.

The Museum Carnuntinum was built by Friedrich Ohmann and August Kirstein, two of the most respected architects of the late Austro-Hungarian monarchy, and in 1904 the museum was opened by Emperor Franz Josef I in person. Built in the spirit of historicism in the style of a Roman country villa, the design takes up typical architectural elements from the Roman provinces. The Museum Carnuntinum thus fits seamlessly into the circle of large museum buildings on Vienna's Ringstrasse.

The museum is thus indebted to the past and its treasures, but not trapped in it: state-of-the-art exhibition aspects with touch screens, interactive elements and fantastic lighting technology integrate the objects perfectly into the historic walls, but bring them into the 21st century in terms of mediation and make the exhibition highly interesting for young visitors as well.
