The Museum Gugging houses a permanent selection of fascinating paintings, drawings and objects by the Art Brut artists from Gugging and is constantly expanding its range of exhibitions to include international representatives of this currently highly acclaimed art movement.
The Gugging Museum is the only venue in Austria dedicated to Art Brut. The French artist Jean Dubuffet used the term “Art Brut” to describe a form of art created spontaneously, without any academic or art-theoretical background.
The museum features works by internationally renowned artists such as August Walla, Oswald Tschirtner, and Johann Hauser. Also on display are works by Gugging artists who have (almost) fallen into obscurity, such as Franz Gableck and Otto Prinz. The prolific output of contemporary Gugging artists, who live in the nearby Haus der Künstler, is reflected in unusual and experimental exhibition formats—such as the studios of artists Johann Garber and Karl Vondal within the Museum Gugging itself.
The inspiring atmosphere of the museum, nestled in the heart of the Vienna Woods, allows art lovers to enjoy both art and nature at the same time.
The Museum Gugging is integrated into the internationally unique Art Brut Center, which also includes the Atelier Gugging and the Galerie Gugging. Also worth exploring is the museum shop in the entrance area: the enticing selection ranges from specialized literature to postcards and posters of the works exhibited in the museum and gallery, all the way to clothing by Austrian designers and specially crafted delicacies.
