Benedictine Abbey Göttweig
The Benedictine Abbey Göttweig stands imposingly at 429 metres above sea level on the eastern edge of the Wachau, the home of the Wachau apricot. Since 2013, the old apricot and herb garden has been open to the public in its natural, original state. This kitchen garden is home to around 50 trees of twelve different varieties native to the Wachau.
Programme
Visit one of the highest-altitude apricot orchards in the Wachau and discover everything there is to know about this iconic regional fruit. Enjoy a tasting of delicious Wachau apricot specialities and watch a short film about the cultivation and processing of apricots into high-quality natural products.
Afterwards, take a short walk to either the Kaiserstiege – Austria's largest Baroque staircase – or the magnificent abbey church. Alternatively, you can visit the impressive abbey.
In the abbey shop, you'll find a wide selection of apricot specialities as well as wines from the abbey's own vineyards. Before you leave, take in the breathtaking panoramic view over the Wachau's apricot orchards and vineyards from the terrace.
