Description

Melk has been a spiritual and cultural center of the region for more than 900 years.

Eventful history and vibrant present: Since its foundation in 1089, the baroque Abbey Melk has been inhabited and managed by Benedictine monks. Today it is known worldwide as a spiritual meeting place - with plenty of space for art, culture, nature and science. Thanks to an active secondary school and numerous mediation activities and events throughout the year, a constant breeze of fresh air is blowing through the historic premises.

A wide range of guided tours is available for visitors from all over the world - with a variety of themes. Guided and individual tours include the Marble Hall, Imperial Hall and the Abbey Library and Museum. The balcony - the connecting balcony between the marble hall and the library - offers a magnificent view of the Danube valley.

The collegiate church, which can also be visited without a guided tour, is considered a masterpiece of the High Baroque period. Precious frescoes and paintings as well as the magnificent high altar invite you to linger.

Relaxation & enjoyment - in the paradise that is Stift Melk’s park

In the open air, the abbey park invites you to look around, marvel and relax. The revitalised garden is characterised by baroque currents and the model of the English landscape garden. The baroque pavilion contains frescos by the Bohemian painter Johann Wenzel Bergl.

Modern garden accents await with the meditative Benediktusweg and the "Speaking Stones", which tell the story of creation with children's voices. Finally, the slightly hidden, but lovingly planted garden of paradise can be discovered. The getaway experience in Stift Melk is rounded off with a restaurant, café and souvenir shop.
