It’s not all about Veltliner grapes: Thermenregion Wienerwald (Vienna Woods thermal region)

The Wienerwald thermal region stretches from the southern outskirts of Vienna to an area just south of Baden, and boasts around 2,200 hectares of vineyards. The area claims domestic rights for the white grape varieties Zierfandler (Spätrot) and Rotgipfler, which are typical of the region and otherwise hard to find. These grapes are also used to make the iconic Spätrot-Rotgipfler Cuvée. When it comes to red wines, the native varieties that give the region its reputation are St. Laurent and Pinot Noir. Excellent Blauer Portugieser (formerly known as Vöslauer) and Neuburger, as well as modern wines from Burgundy to Merlot, are also on offer. Numerous taverns and vineyard shops await wine lovers in Gumpoldskirchen, which is at the heart of the region.
