Details for: Hike to the Neue Seehütte (from Griesleiten)

Brief description

Many paths lead to the Neue Seehütte on the Raxalpe; this one starts in Griesleiten—public and easily accessible by car—and safely brings experienced hikers over the Göbl-Kühn-Steig onto the Rax.

Description

The Neue Seehütte lies at 1,643m on the Rax at the foot of the Trinksteinsattel, west of the Preiner Wand in the water protection area of the municipality of Vienna. The hut offers space for 40 people in the parlor and 120 in the beer garden. The hut is very popular among hikers and climbers. Numerous via ferratas lead over the Preiner Wand to the hut. On the route from Griesleiten, we bypass the Preiner Wand via the Griesleitengraben and the Göbl-Kühn-Steig near the Styrian border. One can also start from Prein an der Rax or the Preiner Gscheid and reach this route. Those who prefer a more leisurely hike take the Rax cable car from Hirschwang to the mountain station and go via the lake path (red marked) or the ridge path over Jakobskogel and Preinerwandkreuz (blue marked) to the Neue Seehütte. This route is part of a stage of the Weg am Wiener Alpenbogen.

Whichever way you choose, your efforts will be rewarded with curd strudel, juicy roast pork from the wood oven, or tasty game dishes.

Route description Hike to the Neue Seehütte (from Griesleiten)

We start uphill from the public parking lot above the Griesleitenhof (Attention: inn is closed!). After the first curve, we turn right onto the path and follow it straight ahead. We turn left and reach the road again, which we follow uphill. At the junction, we continue on the hiking trail that leads straight back to the paved road. Here we follow the bend and then take the path that branches off to the left. The path leads back onto the road; here we keep right on the yellow marking. If we follow the path to the left, we pass the Waxriegelhaus and return to our route via the yellow marking. We now go up the Göbel-Kühn-Steig (Attention: sure-footedness and no fear of heights required!) and come directly to the new Seehütte.
