Brief description

***** Attention: Renaturalization works and forestry work are taking place on the path between Preiner Gscheid and Waxriegelhaus. Please use the ascent via the forest road or Rettenbachgraben!! ****

Rax hut circular route from Preiner Gscheid via Karl-Ludwig-Haus, Habsburghaus and Seehütte. Return via Waxriegelhaus to Preiner Gscheid.

NOTE: Please check the current opening hours of Habsburghaus before starting your route!

Description

This fifth variant of hut jumping on the Rax starts at Preiner Gscheid, leads up to the Habsburghaus, via the new Seehütte and the Göbl-Kühn-Steig back to Edelweißhütte.

Route description Hut Jumping on the Raxalpe (Variant 3)

We start the hike at Preiner Gscheid. Past the Karl-Ludwig-Haus, continue up to the Habsburghaus. From there, head south over the Trinksteinsattel. From the new Seehütte, we hike down the Göbl-Kühn-Steig to Waxriegelhaus. The last section takes us back to Preiner Gscheid along the forest road. Please do not cross the "old ski slope" or walk off-trail. Due to erosion damage, this section needs to recover.

Parking

Parking is available at Preiner Gscheid.

  • Take the train to Payerbach-Reichenau station.
  • Then take the Regional Bus 342 from Payerbach-Reichenau station to Preiner Gescheid or book a ride with the RUFbus Semmering-Rax (stop 132)

Equipment

Always take suitable maps with you. Wear sturdy shoes suitable for the route, take sun and rain protection, as well as water and a snack. Take your mobile phone with you and save the emergency number of the mountain rescue: 140

Make sure that the chosen route matches your mountain experience and fitness level. Check the weather forecast in advance. The weather in the mountains can change surprisingly quickly. Therefore always start properly equipped (e.g. rain gear).

Check if the huts and snack stations you want to visit are open. Inform someone about your chosen route and planned return time before you set off.

In fog and strong wind, hiking on the high plateau is not recommended!
