Details for: Mostviertel River Bike Route, Stage 1: St. Pölten - Melk

Brief description

The multi-day bike route and thus also the first stage start in St. Pölten. This stage is very flat, leads westward out of the state capital and then follows the Pielach river downstream to the confluence with the Danube at Melk.

Description

Those who love variety, enjoy gentle hills coupled with alpine mountain scenery, and like to try something new will be delighted by the Mostviertel River Bike Route. This route connects Mostviertel's cycling delicacies, brand new with tried and tested — let yourself be surprised!

The start and end of this varied route is the state capital St. Pölten. First, it goes along the Pielachtal cycle path to Melk, then along the Danube cycle path to Ybbs. Here the route turns onto the Ybbstal cycle path into the heart of Mostviertel – the Moststraße.

At the next stop – one of the Most barons – the specialties of Mostviertel are tasted, including the region’s namesake – the Most cider. From here the route leads into the alpine areas of Mostviertel.

The next stage destination is Waidhofen an der Ybbs. Here begins the new section, the centerpiece of the Ybbstal cycle path – constructed on the former railway track. It promises uninterrupted cycling pleasure all the way to Lunz am See.

The next day starts relaxed with a bus ride. Cyclists and bikes comfortably overcome the Zellerrain ascent and reach the well-known pilgrimage site Mariazell. After visiting the basilica and Pirker’s gingerbread world, the ride continues on the Traisental cycle path to St. Aegyd am Neuwalde.

The final stage calmly follows the Traisen river downstream from St. Aegyd back to the starting point St. Pölten.
