Route description Nibelungengau long distance trail 4: Maria Taferl - Leiben

Almost in the middle of the route from Linz to Vienna, the most important place of pilgrimage of Lawer Austria lies on a hill with a height of 443 meters. High above the Danube valley, Maria Taferl offers a unique view of the surrounding area including the Alps, Schneeberg (snow mountain) and Traunstein (mountain). The tour starts at the panorama panel at the village entrance and leads past the golf course, until the way branches off to direction Artstetten. From there the way leads along the „Jakobsweg“ (Way of St. James) to the panorama panel in Artstetten in front of the town hall. The white castle with its seven characteristic onion domes thrones in the background. Here once lived heir to the throne archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie duchess of Hohenberg. With a lot of variety the way now leads from Artstetten to Leiben. The stage ends at the panorama panel at Leiben castle. The approximately 800-year-old castle thrones on a massive and steep rock and marks the transition from the southern part of the rough woodquarter into picturesque Danube valley in a very impressive way.
