Details for: To the Jelinekwarte

Brief description

Short hike from the old town of Scheibbs to the popular Jelinekwarte.

Description

The son of a lawyer, Dr. Heinrich Jelinek, originally from a Moravian family, went down in the history of the town of Scheibbs as a recognized local historian. With the construction of the Dr. Heinrich Jelinek lookout in 1953 at Burgerhof above the town, Scheibbs paid him a visible tribute during his lifetime. The wooden lookout with a total height of 12.3 meters was completely renovated in 2007.

We leave Rathausplatz along Burgerhofstraße running along the castle wall and shortly afterwards pass through a well-preserved archway before turning right and immediately left again. Past idyllic houses, we cross the Schöllgrabenbach. We are now on the Jägersteig, a popular connecting path between the town center and the Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium. Approaching from the north side, we follow the path above the school grounds to reach the Burgerhof settlement and the street "Am Burgerhof." We stroll through this quiet residential area for a short time before a well-signposted hiking trail branches off from the street and leads via Grubtal to the Jelinekwarte. Once at the top, we enjoy a magnificent view over Scheibbs from the wooden lookout. After our well-deserved rest, we take the somewhat longer serpentine path back.
