The wine experience route starts and ends in medieval Retz and leads clockwise through the surrounding communities. The town of Retz, which also represents the center of the region, offers quite a lot with its unique cellar labyrinth and the widely visible landmark, Austria's only still operational windmill. In the surroundings of Retz, an entertaining program also awaits: cellar alley tours in the “Maulavern” in Zellerndorf or in the Öhlberg cellar alley in Pillersdorf. Many places allow interesting insights into the historical wine culture of this region. The multiple-award-winning Veltliner stronghold Röschitz and the town Schrattenthal – the smallest wine town in Austria – impress with excellent wines and are regarded as a fixed point for all visitors. The best panoramic view is enjoyed from the Europawarte in Waitzendorf, which offers an excellent view over the entire Retzer Land, reaching into the Waldviertel. Finally, one should also visit the “Heiligen Stein” in Retzbach to recharge strength for future tasks.
