Hiking trail no. 42 in Gföhl
Beautiful views and evil monsters: into the southern Gföhleramt via Kühberg to Tiefenbach - Dreiturnerberg (legend of the 3 giants) - Hussite cross - Galgenriedel
The mountain hiking trail over Kühberg to the "viewpoint" at 654 m offers an insight into the geology of the 350 million year old gneiss highland. The Gföhler gneiss, an orthogneiss, is a repeatedly transformed basement rock (plutonite) which forms distinctive rock towers and ledges on the slopes, which inspired legends ("dragon legend"). The Hussite cross on the Niederlage commemorates the Czech Reformation war of 1426/27, after the reformer Jan Hus was sentenced to death at the Council of Constance; on the Galgenriedel by the "hanging stone", the blood judiciary was practiced by the lordship of Gföhl until the 18th century.

Destination point of the tourGföhl, Hauptplatz
From the main square, walk towards the Kühberg forestry house. After the Bauernferdl clearing (abandoned homestead), take a detour to the "viewpoint" (sphinx-shaped rock block), which offers a magnificent view down into the Krems valley and as far as Göttweig (the path is signposted and you return the same way). Without detour, hike along the Hanselgraben forest path (Kotiggrund) to the Scheitermais bridge (ford across the Tiefenbach at about 400 m), then steeply uphill to the Dreiturnerberg (552 m), at the clearing of the abandoned homestead Tiefenbacher along the forest path up to the Langleiten. Here you can make another detour to the rock formation of the 3 towers (legend of the evil giants) and then return to the path. You pass the Hussite cross and the Galgenriedel on the Niederlage (591 m) on the B37 and return to Gföhl via the farm shop (inn). Here another detour is possible to the Brunner fish ponds at the Tiefenbach, which are located near the hiking trail. Otherwise, you return to the starting point in Gföhl via Langenloiserstraße.
