Alpkogel
Mountain summit
Description
The Alpkogel is a 1,414 meter high mountain in the Semmering region. The Styrian-Lower Austrian border runs across the summit. Politically speaking, the Alpkogel belongs to Spital am Semmering and Trattenbach, with the latter's municipal border with Schottwien running north just below the summit to the ridge line.
The mountain is usually hiked as part of the area's high-altitude hiking trails: the Niederösterreichischer Landesrundwanderweg via Semmering - Sonnwendstein to Fröschnitzsattel, the Gloggnitzer Rundwanderweg (834) in several variants, or the Steirischer Voralpenweg (740) on the ridge. Access is also possible from Göstritz, from Trattenbach via Schlaggraben or Ottenbach as well as Steinhaus via Dürrgraben. Several easy paths lead to the wooded summit.
Due to the numerous forest paths, the mountain is also easy to reach on mountain bikes. In winter, the Wechsel panorama trail runs here. The mountain is an attractive destination for snowshoe hikers and ski tourers.
