Description
Directly on the main road, around 3 km outside Petronell-Carnuntum and 500 m from Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, the world of gladiators comes to life in the amphitheater of the military town.
The atmosphere of ancient gladiator fights can still be felt today as you walk through the arena. However, the arena was also used by the legionaries for combat training, drills, parades and public gatherings. Septimius Severus, governor of the province of Upper Pannonia, may even have been proclaimed emperor here in the amphitheatre. The amphitheater is the only part of the former military city that is still visible. The walls were rebuilt towards the end of the 2nd century A.D. The arena was entered via two entrances, one to the east and one to the west. In total, there was room for up to 8,000 visitors.
The annual gladiator fights in the arena of the amphitheater provide thrills for young and old!
