Model garden

Description

Our organic tree nursery is located in the Upper Waldviertel in Lower Austria in the valley of the village of Reichenau am Freiwald at over 800 m above sea level near the Upper Austrian and Bohemian borders. Our nursery is also called 'Silva Nortica', which can be translated as both 'high land' and 'northern forest'. For 35 years now, we have dedicated ourselves to the preservation of old fruit varieties. Most of our fruit trees are grafted onto seedling rootstocks, making them particularly long-lived, robust and adaptable. We also propagate fruit species and varieties that are sufficiently frost-hardy in terms of wood and blossom, but nevertheless feel more comfortable and thrive better in climatically more favorable locations. Due to our altitude and the associated lower total amount of heat available, the fruit quality is simply less satisfactory. Just think of winter pears such as the Vereinsdechant pear, which produces healthy, beautiful fruit every year, but which often tastes cloying due to insufficient ripening. But we also propagate fruit and berry species and varieties that don't really belong in the Waldviertel, such as kiwis, figs, Indian bananas etc. And - with success! We currently have over 700 different, mainly old fruit varieties in our range.Another mainstay of our production is the extremely extensive range of berries, which not only gives a lot of pleasure in private gardens, but is also well positioned in organic commercial cultivation. Another focal point is our range of roses with around 250 species and varieties. We have been an organic farm from the very beginning - back then there were no organic subsidies... The use of natural fertilizers, observing the phases of the moon was and is a matter of course for us.Weed' in the rows of our plants is weeded by hand, composted and returned to the natural cycle.
