Description

Art meets the Danube - a unique visual experience in the middle of the river

The roller ferry between Spitz and Arnsdorf is not just a charming means of transportation across the Danube - it is also the setting for an extraordinary work of art: the "Camera Obscura for the Danube" by internationally renowned artist Olafur Eliasson.

Since 2004, the ferry's small cabin has been transformed into a walk-in darkroom. The light from the surroundings falls through an opening onto a lens and is projected onto the interior wall in reverse. This creates a fascinating, moving image of the landscape - a kind of living painting of sky, water and shore.

Those who step on board experience the Danube in a completely new way: quiet, intense and full of magic. The passing Wachau becomes a play of light and movement that sharpens perception and slows down the moment.

A work of art to immerse yourself in

Olafur Eliasson's Camera Obscura is more than just an installation - it is an invitation to discover vision for yourself. The ferry becomes a space for viewing, the Danube a mirror of nature. Between technology and poetry, the result is a very special experience for all the senses.

The work was created as part of "Kunst im öffentlichen Raum Niederösterreich" and turns the Danube itself into the stage for an artistic dialog between people, movement and landscape.

Tip: The roller ferry runs regularly between Spitz and Arnsdorf (April to October, depending on the water level and weather). A visit is particularly worthwhile in sunny weather - then the interplay of light and movement can be seen in all its intensity.
