Description
Village museum
The gallery on the ground floor shows contemporary art, photography and handicrafts. Every year, four artists from near and far take the opportunity to create an exhibition and present their works to a wide audience, an amazing variety, something for every taste.
The local history museum is located in the spacious attic (unfortunately only accessible via a staircase). Here we are transported back to times long past. Who still knows the (almost) vanished crafts today? With skills that amaze us and simple tools, the objects needed for everyday life were created! Much of what used to be done by hand is now done by machines, and much knowledge has unfortunately already been lost. Some of the tools used by binders, millers, saddlers, locksmiths, blacksmiths, shoemakers, joiners and carpenters can be seen in the small, fine exhibition. Agricultural tools and household items give us a glimpse into the often hard life of the past. In between, there are also other exhibits such as school supplies, fire helmets and curiosities such as the patented serial mousetrap. Curious, there is still so much to discover!
Gmoahaisl
The Gmoahaisl next to the village museum was inhabited until 2002, then affected by the flood of the century in 2002 and subsequently vacant. In 2008, it was made available to the museum association and adapted as a museum after many hours of work.
A place dedicated to the"Memories of Friedensreich Hundertwasser" was created. Hundertwasser bought the nearby Hahnsäge back in 1965 and spent many weeks and months there until his death in 2000. The exhibition focuses on his life and work in Roiten, and as many people knew him personally, our museum guides are also happy to tell a few anecdotes.
The Zwettl-born photographer Günter Schön has succeeded in making "The Memory of Water" visible. His fascinating pictures can be seen in a 2nd exhibition. Water from all over the world, water with music, different music - different pictures, but also tears, water from the Lourdes grotto, you have to see the pictures to understand them!
