Hammer Works and Mineral Center

Handicraft, Museum

Description

The Pehn Hammer Works are the former tool smithy of the Carthusian Monastery of Aggsbach and form a unique historical ensemble. Three overshot waterwheels drive the hammer, bellows and grinding plant. They were expertly renovated recently and are fully operational again. Demonstration smithies for groups on request. Right next door is the Steinstadel Mineral Center where you will find an excellent exhibition of Lower Austrian minerals. The Earth’s history in this area is told in a permanent exhibition and in special alternating exhibitions in a second room. The stone outbuildings of the hammer works serve today as the Steinstadel Mineral Center. Samples of Austrian minerals from near and far are shown in annual exhibitions.
