Kapelle Spachl

Church

Description

With a floor plan of 265 x 205 cm and a height of almost 4 m, the Spachl Chapel is one of the largest chapels in the municipality of Biberbach. Its location between the ancient trees with a view of the church village is also unique. The interior of the chapel is almost entirely taken up by the grotto structure for the large statue of the Virgin Mary. A small round window at the back lets in light, while the side walls are fitted with arched windows. The gabled tiled roof has a wide fascia made of sheet copper on the gable. A double cross is placed at the top. The chapel is located at an old fork in the road.
The time of its construction is a matter of debate. The reporter of the "Boten von der Ybbs" says in the report on the inauguration of the chapel after the renovation in 1989 that some believe the chapel was built after the Turkish period, others think after the French period, because the shooting that the Schacher cross commemorates also took place nearby. However, it is most likely that this "Lourdes Chapel" - and it can be identified as such - was first built under Stefan Leitner, the owner of Spachl from 1842 to 1887, because a whole series of large Marian chapels were built in Biberbach in the period after 1875. The renovated chapel was consecrated in May 1989 during a May devotion. Father Gerhard Ellinger thanked the owner Leopold Wagner and his family for preserving this beautiful memorial.

Tip: The Biberbach chapel trails lead to the most beautiful chapels and shrines in the municipality. The Spachl Chapel can be visited along the Kromos Chapel Trail and the Krausenöd Chapel Trail.
