Kirche St. Anna im Felde
Church
Description
Around 1135, Countess Adelheid von Hohenburg-Wildberg gave Kremsmünster Abbey the "Pehstal" (place where pitch is collected), where she wanted a monastery to be built. However, only one church was built, which was probably consecrated by Bishop Reginbert of Passau in 1140.
The church of St. Anna im Felde stands outside the village on a hill surrounded by meadows and fields. The interesting Gothic building, a successor to the original church, dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries.
Around 1300, Pöggstall became an independent parish. St. Anna im Felde thus became the parish church. Before and after the Reformation, it was a popular pilgrimage church.
In 1810, however, the church was abandoned, cleared out and left to decay, and after extensive restoration work from 1953, St. Anna im Felde is once again a worthy place of worship. Remarkable features include Gothic frescoes, the late Gothic relief figures on the high altar and numerous tombstones of former castle owners.
The church is open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from the beginning of May to the end of October and is closed on other days.
