Altstadt von Krems und Stein
Historical sites
Description
While the old town of Krems retreats elegantly onto the hillsides, Stein lies directly on the river. The prosperity of the former port town of Stein is still astonishing today: richly decorated portals, oriels and architectural treasures such as the Göttweigerhof, the Minorite Church and the parish church. If you come from the Danube, walk across the town hall square past the Johannes Nepomuk monument and the baroque town hall along Steiner Landstraße - past the Kunsthalle Krems art gallery, the caricature museum and the Und monastery - to the Steiner Tor gate. This is the only remaining of Krems' four town gates and is decorated with inscriptions and coats of arms. This is where the old town of Krems begins with the Upper and Lower Landstrasse, which has been the main axis of the town since the Middle Ages. A short tour leads to the Gozzo Castle, the churches and the 16th century town hall, the Göglhaus at the daily market, the Simandl Fountain and the Dominican Church.
