Ottensteiner Teichplatte

Outdoor adventure

Description

The Ottensteiner Teichplatte in Lower Austria's Waldviertel region is a true natural paradise and a popular destination for birdwatchers and nature lovers. On quiet days, the sun and clouds are reflected on the water, while reeds and grasses rustle in the wind. Originally created as fish ponds, the waters now provide a valuable habitat for numerous animal and plant species.

More than 90 bird species breed at the Ottensteiner Teichplatte, and around 30 more are suspected of breeding. The most common inhabitants include mallards, tufted ducks, coots, little grebes, grey herons and many songbirds. Numerous migratory birds from northern Europe also rest here in the fall. With a bit of luck, rare species such as kingfishers, marsh harriers, black storks and carmine finches can also be observed.

Pond hiking trail no. 51 leads directly from Ottenstein Castle to the Ottenstein pond plateau. The approximately eight-kilometre circular hike takes around 1.5 hours and offers ideal opportunities to discover the diverse wildlife.

A detour to nearby Waldreichs Castle with the Lower Austria Falconry and Birds of Prey Center is also worthwhile. The region around the Ottenstein ponds impressively demonstrates how harmoniously nature, water and culture interact in the Waldviertel, an ideal place for peace, relaxation and a pure nature experience.
