Pfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt
Church
Description
Pöchlarn already had a church, St. Peter's Church, in 832. It was located to the east of the town and fell victim to the decrees of Josef II towards the end of the 18th century. As it was located outside the town walls, the "Liebfrauenkirche" (today's parish church) increasingly took over the function of the town's parish church.
Construction of today's parish church - Maria Himmelfahrt - began between 1389 and 1404. Stones from the demolition of the old town castle (on the site of today's parish church) were used as building material. The church was completed around 1429.
The church was surrounded by a cemetery until 1784, which had to be abandoned in the course of the Josephine church reorganization. Today, 17 gravestones embedded in the church walls are a reminder of this.
