Pulkautal
Outdoor adventure
Description
Where the Pulkau has carved a narrow valley into the primary rock plateau, the Waldviertel and Weinviertel meet, a landscape full of contrasts and quiet beauty. The Pulkau Valley in the Lower Austrian border region combines the harsh climate of the Waldviertel plateau with the mild influences of the Weinviertel, offering the best of both worlds. Between Sigmundsherberg and Pulkau, the river meanders through an idyllic valley, ideal for hiking, relaxing and exploring.
Natural hillside forests, romantic rocks, damp meadows and clear streams characterize the landscape. An excursion is particularly worthwhile in summer, as the shady valley and the refreshing natural stream provide a pleasant coolness. A popular destination is the Neudegg ruins to the west of Pulkau - a silent witness to times gone by. Remains of the castle, which was probably built in the 12th or 13th century, are still preserved with arched windows that tower high above the valley and offer a sweeping view of the landscape.
The Pulkau Valley is also a paradise for animal lovers. With a bit of luck, rare black storks can be seen nesting in the old deciduous forests. Otters also feel at home in the clear river courses, accompanied by brown trout and loaches. The upper reaches between Hötzelsdorf and Pulkau are particularly attractive, where the Pulkau winds its way through rocky slopes and oak forests. If you are looking for nature, peace and history, you will find a real piece of Lower Austria in the Pulkau Valley to breathe in and marvel at.
