Ruine Lichtenfels
Ruins
Description
Once situated on a wooded rocky outcrop above the left bank of the Kamp, the ruins now stand on a peninsula in the middle of the Ottenstein reservoir and offer an extremely picturesque view from the reservoir bridge.
In 1159, Duke Heinrich the second Jasomirgott enfeoffed his servant Hartung von Rauhenegg and his sons with the Veste Lichtenfels.
In 1427, Zwettl Abbey brought its archives and valuables to the hidden Waldburg castle to save the treasures from plundering Hussites. In 1670, Lichtenfels was still a fortified castle.
From the middle of the 18th century, the building was neglected. There is a bathing area and a campsite not far from the ruins.
The ruins can only be visited from the outside!
