Schloss Dobersberg

Castle

Description

In the middle of the "Thayatal-Naturpark Dobersberg", Dobersberg Castle invites you on an excursion for all the senses. The castle is all about art, science and entertainment, and everything around it is about adventure and relaxation. Lovers of beautiful ceramics and naturalists in particular are guaranteed to be in the right place here.

Von Grünne: the count with green fingers

The history of today's Schloss Dobersberg dates back to the Middle Ages. While there was once a fortified courtyard on the same site, the castle is now an integral part of the village.
In 1425, the fortified building was destroyed by the Hussites, and in 1522 Dobersberg came into the possession of Siegmund von Puchheim, who had today's castle built. The succession of estates is varied. Finally, in 1802, Philipp Ferdinand Count von Grünne acquired the property, had the castle renovated and made it the center of his Waldviertel empire. He also had the castle park lovingly redesigned - some of the magnificent avenues of lime trees have been preserved to this day. After the death of Count Philipp III von Grünne, the castle finally passed to his nephew, the Austro-Hungarian diplomat Count Friedrich von Szápáry. The building was badly damaged by the Russian occupation in 1945 and the entire neoclassical interior was lost. In 1948, the municipality of Dobersberg acquired the castle - today it is a municipal office, museum and event venue.

The listed castle has essentially retained its original form to this day. It forms a large, two-storey high quadrangle with a forecourt in front. The corners and the middle of the west front are emphasized by building-high, projecting round towers with curved conical roofs. The main tower at the south-east corner lost the gallery under the gabled roof during the reconstruction in 1805 and has had the round onion-domed roof ever since.

Cultural cellar

The Kulturkeller in the castle has developed into a competence center for ceramics, with exhibitions of Austrian and Czech artists being presented twice a year. In addition, there are regular country exhibitions, events organized by the creative laboratory and the "Handmade Night" concerts by the LiMuPic association. The aim of Handmade Night is to revitalize the local music culture with local and foreign artists on the one hand and to support local artists on the other.

Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum offers a completely different program: here you can discover a collection of local minerals, insects, animals and birds, geological overviews and much more. If you want to recharge your batteries in close proximity to nature, the Dobersberg Nature Park offers plenty of space and a wide range of guided hikes.

Guided tours of the castle in combination with the nature park are only possible by prior arrangement!
