Description
Recreational area steeped in history
St. Leonhard am Forst with its extensive castle park and time-honored castle building is located in the foothills of the Alps in Melk. Built in the 16th century, the three-sided castle looks back on an eventful history of ownership and construction and was also equipped with a landscaped park. In 1828, Emperor Franz I bought the entire complex, which became the property of the market town at the end of 1934, where the administration is still based today.
A considerable number of trees have been preserved from the landscape park, which have been supplemented with numerous new plantings. Visual axes were also cut free and paths edged. Many beautiful ornamental trees can be seen in the castle park, for example boxwood, hornbeam, lime, horse chestnut, hanging ash, but also conifers such as yew.
The active members of the village renewal group are responsible for revitalizing and maintaining the park. Today, the historic park with its old trees and pond is a popular recreational area where you can take a wonderful walk under the venerable giant trees and enjoy the peace and quiet - cultural events and festivals also take place here.
