St. Michaelskirche
Church
Description
The parish church of St. Michael in Pulkau is an impressive fortified church from the 12th century, which is considered a manifestation of faith and a monument to history. After a recent restoration, it offers an impressive church interior and is home to the largest baroque organ outside a monastery in Lower Austria, the Jesswagner organ, which amazes visitors. Other notable sights in Pulkau are the 13th-century charnel house (ossuary), a round chapel that owes its shape to the Crusaders and is considered an imitation of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and the 14th-century Church of the Holy Blood. In this unconventional church, one of the most famous and impressive late Gothic winged altars in Austria can be found in the footsteps of Pulkau master Niclas Breu. Half an hour's walk from Pulkau is the idyllic Maria Heimsuchung pilgrimage chapel, named after a nearby small well whose water is said to have healing properties. Guided tours of the church are available by prior arrangement and support the maintenance of these historic buildings.
