Teiche im Weinsberger Wald
Outdoor adventure
Description
The Ottensteiner Teichplatte in the heart of the Waldviertel is a true natural gem. Where sun and water are reflected and grasses sway gently in the wind, numerous bird species find a protected habitat. Originally created as fish ponds, the waters are now a valuable biotope for rare animals and plants. Endangered species such as the black-necked grebe, kingfisher and marsh harrier live among the reeds, wet meadows and hedges.
Over 90 bird species breed around the Ottenstein ponds, including mallards, tufted ducks, great crested grebes, coots and gray herons. In the fall, migratory birds from northern Europe rest here before heading south. This makes the region an ideal place for birdwatching and nature photography.
Pond hiking trail no. 51 from Ottenstein to Ottensteiner Teichplatte offers a special experience. The approximately eight-kilometre circular hike (approx. 1.5 hours) leads through tranquil landscapes and opens up magnificent views of water surfaces and forests. The starting point is the parking lot at Ottenstein Castle.
Tip: Waldreichs Castle with the Lower Austrian Falconry and Birds of Prey Center is located in the immediate vicinity - a highlight for nature lovers.
Anyone exploring the Waldviertel should visit the Ottensteiner Teichplatte as well as the Hoheneicher Teiche, the Bruneiteich or the Klausteich near Altmelon - perfect places for peace, nature and birdwatching.
