W. H. Audens letztes Auto: Der VW Käfer als Installation

Scenic lookout

Description

The installation of the VW Beetle, the last car of the poet W. H. Auden, is a striking landmark that symbolizes the poet's presence. Designed by Peter Karlhuber, who was also responsible for the redesign of the Auden Museum in 2015, the Beetle stands as a symbol of mobility as a way of life for the cosmopolitan Auden. Until the very end, Auden commuted between Kirchstetten, New York and his old home in England as a poetry traveler. The vehicle served not only as a practical means of transportation for Auden, but also as a symbol of his constant movement and global lifestyle. The installation is part of the project 'Silence Turned into Objects' and is located on the site of the station parking lot, symbolizing the end of Auden's journey. The history of the Beetle and its significance in Auden's life make it a fascinating attraction for visitors who want to learn more about the poet's life and work.

An audio file can be played at the "petrol pump" (part of the installation).
