Pilgrimage church on the old Via Sacra pilgrimage route

Dornau-Thenneberg pilgrimage church "Dornau" - the center of the cadastral parish of Thenneberg - was first mentioned in a document in 1154. The domed church with its two-tower façade is dedicated to the "suffering savior" and was built in 1764 by the last abbot of Klein-Mariazell

The branch church, built in 1764, is dedicated to the "suffering savior" and was built by the last abbot of Klein-Mariazell.

It is of exquisite architecture: the double-tower façade is adorned with niche figures and magnificent picturesque decoration. Inside, the coat of arms of the abbot and builder is carved above the entrance gate.

There are also two rooms with pendentive domes. The frescoes are by Johann Wenzel Bergl and Josef Ignaz Mildorfer. The first dome is decorated with the Adoration of the Lamb, the second with the Last Judgement.

The end of the choir shows God the Father enthroned on clouds with angels at his side. The pulpit was added during the Rococo period around 1770, while the side altars and the current organ were not added until the mid-19th century. The former wayside shrine "Schmerzensmann" dates back to 1637.
