Description
Immerse yourself in history true to the motto "Find time, take time & have time" and start with the archaeology exhibition "30.000 years of the Gars settlement area" - an overview of the history of research into the prehistoric and early historical period with a focus on the late Bronze Age (approx. 1000 BC) and the early Middle Ages (8th-13th century).
The Zeitbrücke Museum is an amalgamation of five large collections united under one roof.
Special exhibition "Kassasturz" until October 26, 2025
"Kassasturz" - this is the name of the anniversary exhibition at the Zeitbrücke-Museum Gars, which is being organized to mark the 40th anniversary of the exhibition "Handel im Wandel". From Friday, June 13, 2024 until October 26, you can see the history of the times in this special exhibition, from the "Stazza" (old cash register books) to the old "Comptoir" (writing room) to modern, contemporary electronic devices.
Old cash registers, calculators and typewriters are on display, as well as the money needed for trade. Banknotes and coins "before and after the Schilling" are on display as well as the "emergency money" which many municipalities had issued.
Of course, you can also study the permanent exhibition "Trade in Transition" in the museum with the old merchant's store, the development of trade and the history of the Kiennast trading house (since 1710).
Babenberg and castle area
The exhibition sheds light on the history of Gars Castle, where the Babenberg Leopold II (reigned 1075 - 1095) once had his seat. His son Leopold III was later canonized and is today regarded as the patron saint of Lower Austria. Coats of arms, pictures, architectural models and original finds document the history of Gars Castle. Depictions of and from St. Gertrude's Church complete the exhibition.
Local history
Oil paintings, chests for storing valuable documents and valuables, furniture from bourgeois houses, fiddles, tools from old craftsmen's workshops, the butchers' guild flag and the tools of the bather give an impression of a bygone era. Furthermore, a photo documentation shows historical objects and formative incisions of the village.
Franz von Suppè memorial
The composer and theater conductor Franz von Suppè (1819 - 1895) is considered the founder of Viennese operetta. The composer's great successes include "Die schöne Galathee" (1865), "Leichte Kavallerie" (1866), "Fatinitza" (1876) and "Boccaccio" (1879). His musical oeuvre is extensive, including comic operas and operettas, magnificent overtures, waltzes, marches (including "O du mein Österreich") and incidental music for a number of stage plays.
1st Austrian Trade Museum
The exhibition "Handel im Wandel - Das 1. Österreichische Handeslmuseum" presents the history of trade, with a particular focus on the Kiennast company (Austria's oldest trading house), a business based in Gars am Kamp. The history of trade from prehistoric times to the present day is illustrated by means of display boards and objects.
Archaeology in the Gars area
The permanent exhibition on archaeology in the Gars area can be seen in the basement of the Zeitbrücke Museum. The exhibition provides an overview of the history of research and material culture from prehistoric and early historical times. The focus is on the Late Bronze Age and the Early Middle Ages.
FALCO in Gars
Photos and handwritten texts convey a vivid picture of Falco's time in Gars. The reports of contemporary witnesses can be called up at the click of a mouse. In an accompanying booklet available at the ZBM, journalist Julia Gschmeidler summarizes the exhibition with reports on the history of its creation, numerous interviews and comments on Niko Havranek's photos.
