Amstetten train station

Train station

Description

The centrally located Amstetten railroad station is situated in the middle of the town of the same name in the Mostviertel region. The bright and barrier-free station allows unrestricted use of the station facilities thanks to the installed lifts and guidance systems for the blind.

Two ticket counters and three ticket machines make it possible to buy tickets for the local and long-distance services operated here. The numerous information monitors, loudspeaker announcements and notices provide the best possible information on current rail operations. The 6 platforms are easily accessible via underpasses and elevators.

The Park & Ride facility built in 2008 provides parking spaces for over 1250 vehicles and thus offers convenient access to the rail network. There are parking spaces for more than 280 bicycles in the adjoining Bike & Ride station.

Route information

Amstetten station is located along the Westbahn line. The Rudolfsbahn branch line also ends at this station. Amstetten station is therefore a hub in the Lower Austrian rail network.

  • Regional trains to St. Valentin are operated along the Westbahn line.
  • Railjets to Vienna Airport and Salzburg are connected here.
  • Regional express trains run to Vienna Westbahnhof.
  • Regional trains in the direction of Kleinreifling start here on the Rudolfbahn line.
  • Thanks to connections to numerous bus lines, there are also transport links to Neuhofen an der Ybbs, Hainstetten and Grein.

The water tower as a landmark of Amstetten

Between 1908 and 1909, the 18 m high water tower with two water tanks, each holding 40,000 liters, was built at Amstetten railroad station. As one of the last buildings of K.u.K. architecture, the water reservoir is a listed building. The four-storey raw brick building not only survived more than a century of time, but also the heavy air raids of the Second World War.

The history

Amstetten station was put into operation as early as 1858 with the opening of the Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Bahn and extended to Salzburg in 1860. In 1872, the line of the Crown Prince Rudolf Railway was also opened up. However, as the two railroad lines were operated by independent companies and the Empress Elisabeth Railway did not allow shared use of the tracks, another set of tracks had to be laid.

Tip: There is a nextbike rental station right next to the station. The bikes are available in Lower Austria from April to mid-November. You can find more information on the website https://www.nextbike.at/de/niederoesterreich/, or in the nextbike app.
