Route information
Mariazell station is the terminus of the narrow-gauge Mariazell Railway.
- The Mariazell Railway runs from the Lower Austrian provincial capital of St. Pölten to the Styrian pilgrimage town of Mariazell.
- Connecting buses are available from the station forecourt to the town center.
When the journey is the destination
As one of the most important and probably best-known places of pilgrimage in Austria, Mariazell is a popular excursion destinations. The journey on the famous narrow-gauge railroad - the Mariazell Railway - is an experience in itself - the route itself offers a total of 85 kilometers of discoveries such as the World of Styx and the Bahnhofsbräu in Ober-Grafendorf. A ride on the stairway to heaven and the panorama car make the journey to the Styrian municipality an unforgettable adventure in itself.
Tip: If the 619 vertical meters reached by the Mariazell Railway are not enough, take the Bürgeralpe Express up to the Mariazell Bürgeralpe to enjoy the view from Mariazell's local mountain with the Erzherzog-Johann-Aussichtswarte and the Holzknechtland leisure park. The Bürgeralpe Express boarding station is just over a quarter of an hour's walk from Mariazell train station.
Mariazell Basilica
After a short, approximately 20-minute walk from Mariazell train station, visitors reach the town center and thus also the landmark of the place of pilgrimage: the famous Mariazell Basilica.
Tip: Visit Mariazell at Christmas time. The illuminated basilica conjures up an unforgettable atmosphere for the local Advent market.
