Retz train station
Train stationDescription
The tranquil station building in Retz was once the terminus of the railroad line towards Hollabrunn/Drosendorf. After the opening of the border, rail traffic with the small town of Znajm near the border was also resumed, but despite the endurance of the Cold War, it was decided in 2001 to discontinue passenger traffic on the north-west railway line and switch to ÖBB rail buses running parallel to the track.
The three-track station therefore remained open for freight traffic for a few more years, but in 2010 the train service was also closed for transportation.
Fortunately, it was decided not to demolish the station building, but to give the well-preserved line a new purpose with the introduction of the seasonal "Reblaus-Express" adventure train.
Today, the station is in operation and is served daily by regional express trains to and from Vienna.
Make the journey your destination!
The journey from Retz to Drosendorf and back is considered to be a very steep one in terms of railroad technology and is also all too gladly mastered by the nostalgic trains of the Reblaus-Express. Past vineyards and through shady forests, the train reaches speeds of up to 60 km/h. Extensive landscapes can also be enjoyed from the Heurigen wagon, which is operated alternately by regional wine taverns and clubs throughout the season. The entire journey from Retz to Drosendorf takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes.
As a popular excursion destination, Retz offers plenty of opportunities to explore the area away from the tracks.
The main square, the largest market square in Austria, is just an 8-minute walk from the train station in Retz and from there you can continue to the picturesque windmill, for example along the Rosstalenweg.
The Weinviertel and Waldviertel merge into vineyards and forests and promise fantastic hikes and unforgettable views.
