The nostalgic reception building at Weitra station is located along the Waldviertelbahn and offers an insight into the history of railway operations in the region in addition to the interesting and informative display boards on site. It is also possible to visit the historic water crane and the weigh house. Tickets for the trips with the trains of the rustic Waldviertel narrow-gauge railway can be purchased directly on the trains, as well as online.

Route information

  • The station Weitra is located on the southern branch of the Waldviertler Schmalspurbahn.
  • The nostalgic trains of the Waldviertelbahn to Gmünd and Groß Gerungs stop here when needed.
  • In a few minutes walk you reach the bus station in Weitra to get to connecting buses to Gmünd, Zwettl and Großpertoldholz.

Weitra Castle

Not far from the train station you can reach Weitra Castle with a short stroll. Numerous events as well as the possibility to rent the castle for weddings and events experience a very special ambience with the cultural property as a backdrop.

The history and secrets of the castle are made accessible to guests in the castle museum - and this has been the case since the Lower Austrian provincial exhibition "From the Tower to the Cellars" in 1994.

As Austria's oldest brewery town, Weitra's beer trail leads through the tranquil old town. Along the signposted paths you will learn a lot of interesting facts about the liquid gold and of course there is also the possibility to taste the Weitra beer.
