Whether they are in a pram or in their parents’ arms, even the smallest visitors will feel right at home in Lower Austria. There are plenty of excursion destinations, petting zoos and exciting playgrounds for them to explore. Parents will also be happy, because we have made sure to note the pram/pushchair suitability of all of these suggestions. Nothing can stop you from having a great family day out!
Water, water everywhere!
Water has incredible pulling power, and is fun for ‘children’ of all ages! Who doesn’t like to splash around?! Otters also feel at home in water. Head to the UnterWasserReich in Schrems to see some furry friends swimming backstroke. Don’t miss the otter feeding show! Children can also try their hand at looking through a microscope, or marvel at local fish in the aquarium. In summer, it’s fun to cool off by splashing around in the Lunzer See Lake, or sitting eating an ice cream on the shores of the Strandbad Hollenstein bathing lake or the Flussbad in Göstling. A very flat beach and various playgrounds are perfect for little bathing beauties and water babies. You can also cool down at Eis-Greissler Blochberger – which is home not only to an amazing ice cream factory, but also a fantastic play area! Ahoy, me hearties! Any keen sailors will love pretending to be a captain on the Wiener Neustadt Canal.
Fun with four-legged and winged friends!
Kids love animals – and so do grown-ups. These excursion destinations are fun for all the family! The Museumsdorf Niedersulz open-air museum shows what village life was like in the year 1900. It includes goats, pigs, rabbits, poultry, and everything else that would have been part of a real farmstead at the time. The enclosures allow children to meet lots of animals. There is a family tour at 3:00 pm on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month. The “GARTEN TULLN” botanical gardens are home to Lower Austria’s largest open-air adventure playground, as well as interactive stations about gardens for explorers of all ages. In the Roman City of Carnuntum, there is a fascinating ancient neighbourhood, as well as a large playground. The Sparbach Nature Park is the place to be for anyone who wants to get “a glimpse” of nature. As well as a great playground, the little ones will love the animals that live there. The free-roaming wild boars are the star attraction. In the Kittenberger Erlebnisgärten botanical garden there is a large play area, as well as goats, ponies, alpacas and even Waldwiertel kangaroos. The alpacas, goats and ponies can do all kinds of tricks!
Tip: The Haus der Wildnis (House of the Wilderness) in Lunz am See has lots of interactive activities on offer for children. It relies on modern technology. Using augmented reality, VR headsets and a 180-degree cinema, you can immerse yourself deep in the jungle without leaving the 700 m² exhibition space. The building is barrier-free, and therefore easily accessible for prams and pushchairs!

The little yellow Niederösterreich-CARD (Lower Austria Card) is valid for year, and gives you free entry to over 300 attractions! If you are exploring the Mostviertel, the Wilde Wunder Card is strongly recommended. It entitles families to free entry to several attractions in the region if their accommodation is registered as a Wilde Wunder Gastgeber (“Wilde Wunder Host”).
