Description

Rendezvous with Schirmföhre and Ziesel

"Föhrenberge" is the name of the extensive forest area in the Vienna Woods, which stretches from Mödling to the southern edge of Vienna. Characteristic are the umbrella-shaped black pines ("Paraplui trees"). They form the backdrop around the vibrant Sparbach nature park. In the nature park, numerous hiking trails lead you through pine and beech forests, over gentle hills and to shelters. Among the natural highlights of the region ranks the Perchtolsdorfer Heide. The dry grassland is also a habitat for squirrels. The approx. 20 cm big rodents enjoy strict protection.

"Umbrella trees" and dry grassland
Characteristic for the pine mountains are the umbrella-shaped black pines, in Viennese also called as Parapluie trees or "umbrella trees" and the extensive dry grasslands of the Perchtoldsdorfer Heide.

One of the peculiarities of the black pine, apart from the extraction of resin in earlier times, is certainly the fact that its wood does not "creak" and is therefore very popular for theatre stages.

Our hiking tip:

  • From the Goldenen Stiege to the Anninger Schutzhaus
  • From the Goldene Stiege car park via the "Breite Föhre" and Anningerstraße, past the "Krauste Linde" inn, to the Anninger-Schutzhaus (stamp) and back to the starting point (5 km/2 h).
