Oskar Kokoschka House

It is not just the magical old town of Pöchlarn with its towers and castle that awaits your visit, the town is also the birthplace of the world-famous artist Oskar Kokoschka.

Pöchlarn is located on the banks of the Danube in Nibelungengau and is also known as Niebelungenstadt. This is where Oskar Kokoschka was born in 1886. He is one of the most important artists of the Expressionist movement, known more specifically for the portraits and landscapes he painted.

Painter, illustrator, sculptor, poet

Kokoschka also worked as an illustrator, sculptor and poet. His work was deemed degenerate art by the Nazis. He developed his world-renowned creativity throughout many periods and he continued painting into his later years.

Images of nature, illustrations, photos

The house he was born in now acts as a museum. The Oskar Kokoschka House in Pöchlarn hosts an annual summer exhibition in the summer months from May to October. In the past, this exhibition has been dedicated many subjects from photos by Kokoschka, his images of nature, illustrations to world literature.
