Eggern
Quiet Eggern in the Waldviertel is a beautiful vacation destination for the whole family. The village was first mentioned in a document in 1230. Today, the market town in the district of Gmünd offers vacation accommodation surrounded by greenery - and the Egger bathing pond is an oasis for swimming and fishing. The wooded landscape can be explored on numerous easy walking and hiking trails. Incidentally, none other than Formula 1 star Alexander Wurz comes from this tranquil village.
Excursions in Eggern in the Waldviertel: hikes and sights in the countryside
There is plenty to discover in Eggern for young and old alike. The old church, dedicated to St. Ägidus and dating back to 1792, is a historical highlight, while bizarre rock formations can be admired near the Bocksbühelweg trail. On hiking trail no. 33 (Pengersweg), the so-called Maly stones await in the middle of the forest - with their original lime kiln.
Hiking tip: The 11-kilometre Reinbergweg is a hike that takes around 2.5 hours. It leads from the center of Eggern via the Gabler wayside cross and the Grabner wayside cross - and presents the Holy Trinity Chapel and a 300-year-old oak tree before returning to Eggern.
Vacations by the water: from brook to bathing pond
Eggern is a particularly beautiful hike along the Romau. The 26-kilometre-long stream flows from the Czech Republic to Lower Austria. In Eggern, the course of the Romau has been extensively revitalized in a sustainable project. Water fun for the whole family awaits at the Eggern landscape pond: the clearly laid out area is particularly suitable for vacations with small children. The idyllic pond is surrounded by beautiful meadows and woods. Thanks to its pike and carp, it is also a well-known fishing tip.
