Haugschlag
Haugschlag is the northernmost municipality in Austria. Situated on the border with the Czech Republic, it belongs to the district of Gmünd. The municipal area includes Griesbach, Haugschlag, Rottal and Türnau. Surrounded by rolling hills, lush meadows and dark forests, Haugschlag is an ideal place for exciting excursions into unspoiled nature. Those who prefer playing golf to hiking are only too happy to check into the 4-star superior golf resort Haugschlag.
Fact for film fans: Austrian actress Nina Proll ("Nordrand", "Vorstadtweiber" etc.) was born here.
Haugschlag: Northern lights & rock giant
An international signpost awaits visitors of all ages in Rottal. Not far from here, the 49th parallel and the 15th meridian east of Greenwich meet in the Rottal forest. A meridian stone provides information about this. Speaking of stone: in Haugschlag, a five-metre-high granite boulder, the so-called Hutstein, can still be admired today - once a meeting point for major battles.
Sacred eye-catchers in Haugschlag
Haugschlag is home to a parish church built in 1787. The high altar from the 18th century comes from the former Dominican monastery in Krems. There are pretty local chapels in Türnau, Griesbach and Rottal.
