Hirschbach
The market town of Hirschbach in the district of Gmünd is located in the pond and lake region of the upper Waldviertel. The idyllic ponds and flat hiking trails in a peaceful, wooded landscape offer wonderfully relaxing vacation and excursion opportunities.
Historic Hirschbach
The name Hirschbach was first mentioned in 1280 in a document kept in the archives of Zwettl Abbey. The once proud castle - a Renaissance building from 1580 - has long since disappeared: It was divided up into 16 small houses. The castle chapel has become the parish church. Hirschbach has been an independent parish since 1741.
A depiction of the crucifixion by Martin Johann Schmidt, also known as "Kremser Schmidt" - one of the most important and internationally recognized painters of the Austrian late Baroque period - is very noteworthy.
