Sankt Martin

Healthy, sustainable - and scenically beautiful: Sankt Martin in the district of Gmünd is located in the natural north-west of the Waldviertel region, right on the Czech border. Nestled in the enchanting Lainsitztal valley, the market town stretches from the foot of the Nebelstein to the Kögelberg. Lying in the middle, like a wooded castle, the Wachtberg seems to guard the region all around. Vacations in the countryside are particularly enjoyable here: on family hikes between exciting-looking rocks and magical giant trees, even young vacation guests are guaranteed not to get bored.

Sankt Martin: Waldviertel hiking paradise

A network of over 70 kilometers of marked hiking trails runs through the seemingly endless forest area. It invites vacation and excursion guests to Sankt Martin for extended hikes - between stone witnesses to history, bizarrely shaped granite blocks and idyllic giant trees.

We particularly recommend a hike to the 1,017-metre-high Nebelstein, whose summit rewards you with a wonderful view for the climb. The Waldviertel cycle path leads along the Lainsitz river through the municipal area - and offers pristine impressions. An idyllic swimming pond with adjoining camping area, beach volleyball court and barbecue area is perfect for cooling off and swimming.

And in winter? The village of Harmanschlag is transformed into a ski Mecca for the whole family - with three T-bar lifts and floodlights.

Sustainable St. Martin: healthy triangle and organic fields

Together with the spa communities of Bad Großpertholz and Moorbad Harbach, Sankt Martin forms a "healthy triangle". Nature and health are the core values in this feel-good community. In the Lainsitztal nature reserve, high air quality and sustainable agriculture are top priorities. St. Martin is considered a fruit tree village - and the 1st organic milk village in Austria. The valley is now also famous as a potato region: over 30 special varieties are grown here organically, marketed and refined into culinary specialties in the regional gastronomy.
