Schwarzenau
The market town of Schwarzenau in the district of Zwettl is the geographical and transport center of the Lower Austrian Waldviertel. The municipal area includes the cadastral communities of Ganz, Großhaselbach, Hausbach and Limpfings as well as Modlitsch, Schlag, Schwarzenau and Stögersbach. The German Thaya flows through the area. Here, friendly inns and family-run accommodation invite you to enjoy a relaxing short break in the heart of the Waldviertel - for a time-out for two or a family outing in the countryside.
Schwarzenau Castle: a turbulent past, a romantic present
The Renaissance Schwarzenau Castle was first mentioned in documents in 1150 as a castle. In the 16th century, it was converted into the castle it is today. During the Second World War, it was used as a refugee home and occupied by the Soviets. During these years, the once magnificent building was severely damaged. From 1991, the castle - once again in private ownership - underwent extensive renovations. Today, the grounds are impressive with their park and pond as well as the valuable ornate outbuildings such as the tavern and chapel. The latter is a popular wedding venue.
